Storytelling – an ancient tradition

I love movies…I love books…I love stories! And today stories continue to permeate every part of our lives, whether we’re listening to a podcast or audio book, reading a novel on our daily commute, or binge watching the latest Netflix boxset at home.

Storytelling is an ancient tradition, going back to thousands of years to when we were hunter gatherers drawing pictures in caves. All cultures have stories, and the themes in these stories are universal. Stories are used to entertain but also to teach lessons, instil moral values, and maintain traditions, passed down from generation to generation.

Our love for storytelling, our need for storytelling is something that makes us uniquely human.

Stories are everywhere – they’ve been critical in the development of our species and they continue to play a huge role in our lives. Look at how much the latest Avatar movie has grossed already.

And our consumption of stories is evolving through the use of technology – from books which asked you to make choices to take you down different avenues, to games like Dungeon.& Dragons to massive multi-player online role-playing games… Even Netflix experimented with more interactivity and narrative shaping with the 2018 Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch. What will Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality bring to the storytelling party?
