Show don’t tell

As a big movie fan, I have really got into the podcast series, the Cine Files, which goes into unbelievable levels of geekiness about individual films! Their dissection of certain movies can last longer than the movie itself – highly recommended if you’re a movie buff!

One of the things I picked up on one of the episodes was the importance of exposition and the key concept of “Show don’t tell” and it struck me that that this perfectly sums up what effective coaching has at its heart.

As coaches, through our questions and our observations we help our clients gain insights into whatever they’ve brought into the coaching session: we don’t tell them what we think might be going on, we show them by holding a mirror up to them through our observations without judgment so the insights and conclusions generated are theirs and theirs alone.

Show, don’t tell.
