Mindfulness

Here are a couple thoughts about mindfulness…

I love this quote from Steve Jobs about the importance of calming the mind, giving it room to breathe and “blossom”, through the practice of mindfulness meditation.

“If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there’s room to hear more subtle things- that’s when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before.”
I’ve derived lots of benefits from mindfulness – from learning to be able to notice emotions, feelings and then accepting their existence to simply slowing down.

There are a lot of guides, books, apps out there to help with mindfulness meditation. I tried a few and settled on Sam Harris’s Waking App – I liked the fact that Sam has a background in neuroscience advocating mindfulness and the benefits it offers.

Indeed there is a growing body of scientific evidence that mindfulness meditation influences our ability to concentrate, strengthens our emotion regulation skills, and enhances our self awarenes, even leading to a change in the brain’s structure!
